Any time you come across a free damp survey it is very tempting but do bear in mind any free survey is almost 100% likely to be done by a company with something to sell you, which is likely to be a form of damp treatment.
So you may think it’s a canny thing to get three surveys and choose the one with the cheapest remedy. Before doing so please read our page on damp and especially watch the video. We won’t go as far as to say all surveys carried out by a damp proofing company will be bogus, and the most common treatment (ie chemical damp course and replastering over a waterproof membrane) will probably stop the appearance of damp in the room/s where you have the problems. But this could be a more of a band aid than a cure of the underlying cause. With any luck the band aid will last a bit longer than the guarantee.
However if you have an older house consider what is fast becoming the Eco DIY mantra “these old houses need to breathe…”
